Frequently Asked Questions About Comfort & Consolation
Why did Maryland's bishops issue a new pastoral letter on the care of the sick and dying?

The Maryland-serving bishops wish to provide practical and compassionate guidance for those facing the often difficult moral questions that arise in times of grave illness and impending death. The letter speaks compassionately about the care we must take for ourselves as we approach the end of our life on earth, and the care we must provide to others who are suffering.

The bishops share with us the Church’s teaching on respect for human life in the context of sickness, suffering, and dying. They note that we all have a common duty to care for the sick — including ourselves when we are sick — and they explain the principles at the heart of Church teaching that must guide medical decisions in times of serious illness.

The letter concludes with a Catholic Declaration on Health Care Decision Making accompanied by “Instructions for My Health Care” that cover spiritual support, medical care and treatment, nutrition and hydration should a person be unable to take food and drink orally, pain relieving medication, imminent death from terminal illness, and pregnancy. The form enables Catholics to tell health care providers how they wish to direct their care.
